"The cleanup is taking place just around the corer from where I live in Mission Beach, San Diego. I live on somewhat of an isthmus with Mission bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. It is a very transient area filled with lots of vacation rentals and thus we get A LOT of trash on our beaches... particularly around any holidays and over summer.
My motive for this clean up, besides the obvious ecological benifit, is to inspire locals, and visitors alike, to be more involved in keeping our beaches clean. I aim to remind everyone that it is our home and our backyard and we responsible for keeping it clean for us now and for the future of our children, and their children, etc. Helping them to understand that their input really makes a difference. Not just by cleaning, but by inspiring others to clean up after themselves, as well as educating themselves and gearing away from the use of single use products and plastic.
There have been numerous times where I have seen people walk by huge "in your face" type pieces of trash, and spoken to people who share the same mentality that think "well, there is just going to be more trash anyway, so what's the use?"
Most people have no understanding that the trash ends up in the oceans, and even if they do, out of sight, out of mind, right? Well, our oceans make up 70 percent of the planet just like our bodies. I hope that in doing this I can inspire anyone involved and any passerby to think twice and make a little more effort to change their perspective on the world and our relationship to it, particularly with Oceans and see the big picture of a sustainable future, and that they are one small piece of the big picture, that can make a huge difference.
I believe inspiration is a powerful tool. I also believe that it is incredibly important to get involved with your community. I am still fairly new to this area.. I little over a year... and many people have asked me "why do you try?" in reference to Mission Beach, as opposed to other areas of San Diego that have subcultures that are like minded to myself. My response is: "well, how do you think they got to that point?"
Long story, its the "Weekend Warriors" that make the difference in this world. And when I say weekend, I mean, spare time. Those who are willing to sacrifice a Saturday morning for themselves to better the community as a whole. This is why I am so excited to have you guys participate to help me convey that message!
Aside from Weekend Tee, I have a sustainable, water bottle company involved that have provided me with a couple of reusable water bottles that are made here in the USA out of recycled material to discourage the use of plastic water bottles. I also have two local businesses involved. Swell Coffee Company And Single Fin Surf Grill that will be providing free coffee and happy hour drinks before and after the event to get participants excited about this community driven event and look back on it as a super fun day so when they pick up trash in the future, there will be a smile on their face. :)"
Weekend Tee wants to send a HUGE THANK YOU to Kat for putting this together and to all the Weekend Warriors who helped in the cleanup efforts.
