Big Surf Trip in Monterey Bay - Jason Caroll

Weekend Tee in Monterey Bay

“Salt air, cool breeze, adventures in my soul.” I lived in Monterey Bay for 4 years while attending college (Cal State Monterey Bay) and ended up spending most of my free time down in the Big Sur area. Now that I am old, graduated, and moved away, I try and make weekend trips back to the place that stole my heart (and a few pairs of decent sandals) years ago. So last weekend, some old college friends and I woke up at the butt-crack of dawn and headed out to the glorious central coast. We attempted to hit all the typical tourists spots, but some didn’t make the cut. Point Lobos was too packed to even try and deal with it, so we scooted past and stopped off at Garrapata Beach to do some tinkering at some tide pools. Opposite this beach (down the road about a quarter mile) is a gorgeous hike, called Soberanes Canyon, that I recommend to anyone in the area. It’s a bitch of a hike, but the view at the top is so worth it. Anywaysssss….we made our way down to Bixby Bridge (which was of course crowded as all hell) then carried on to Pfeiffer Beach. Unfortunately they we’re turning people away at the top of the entrance due to it being so crowded, so we tucked in our tail and carried on. We ended up at McWay Falls, which of course is gorgeoussss. And that sums it up. You can get lost for days in Big Sur (which I highly suggest) and this was just a tiny snippet of all that it has to offer. Follow the advice of my favorite quote: “If you’re not lost, you’re not much of an explorer.” So….go get lost.  - Jason Caroll
